Here's what happened:
MAPFRE, acronym for MassDrive Insurance Group, LLC, sent me a bill for "non-payment of the insurance premium" yet I had paid in full for product. When I called customer service, phone person explained that the $127 charged was due on the transfer paperwork performed to change from an older car to a newer one. Right of the gate, It sounded like a scam! MAPFRE even charged a $25 "cancellation fee." Another pathetic excuse upping the charges.
The policy cancellation was made official on 08/24/17 by the company I switched to. The due date expiration on my policy was on 08/27/17. I had my new car insurance policy company explained to me whether it seemed like an illegal business practice to charge customers for a "cancellation fee", that it was bogus at best. Also, the charge for the paperwork on the transfer from one car to another at the tune of $127, unheard of. I did sent in the final bill under the threat of being sent to a collection agency. MAPFRE sells junk insurance policies for which, were a customer in a car accident, payouts on claims would be probably denied. When customers are lucky to find a better insurance company and tries to leave MAPFRE, agents intimidate with charging for already written (months in advance) the next year's policy replacement quote. I was phoned and threatened about leaving MAFRE with due charges as a result of migrating my business to another auto insurance, my customer's loyalty questioned because I found a reasonable auto insurance that saved me some $400 dollars on my new car policy.
When I wrote the BBB, MAFRE replied: "You were billed in a timely manner for that coverage change and when no payment was received, your policy did cancel due to non-payment as you stated. When you called our contact center on August 30, 2017 the representative advised you of this. At this time, there is no further balance owed on your policy and we feel that we have appropriately addressed your concerns." MAFRE lied to the BBB. I never received a bill for "non-payment" until my new auto insurance company notified MAFRE of my cancellation. The day that "non-payment" notice came in the mail (not even a courtesy phone call to customer), I called MAFRE. On the phone it was explained to me the charges were due on paperwork exchange of vehicles. MAFRE lied to the BBB again about the conversation that transpired on the phone. The BBB took MAFRE's side of the argument, never bothering to question the accuracy of their statements, tacitly approving of MAFRE's scamming business practices and closing the case.
