I applied and got a questionnaire send back to me, which I filled in and returned, then received an email stating that I had been chosen for the job. No interview, no telephone interview, nothing to verify who I am or whether my right to live and work in the UK are genuine.
I received a contract of employment via email, inviting me to start work on 2nd April 2012, but I have to live within the hotel complex and I had to pay a registration fee of £435.25 for the accommodation. I tried to contact them by telephone, but the number on their letterhead did not even ring, so I sent a email reply, stating that I do in fact live in the UK, have my own accommodation, so therefore did not need to pay the registration fee. I then received an email stating that for the first year of employment, all employees accommodation is the responsibility of the hotel management. A copy of this has been pasted below.

The Connaught Hotel

The proper switchboard number for the Connaught in Mayfair is: T: +44 (0)20 7499 7070, yet the one listed on their letter head is 44 (0) 70 3596 2207.
I managed to call the real Connaught Hotel today, but as it is Saturday, the Human Resources department is closed, I will try again on Monday, but I know that there is no Barry Bond-Josh working there.
Luckily, I was not stupid to send them any money, but I am thinking about people who live abroad who will have sent their accommodation money, waiting for flight tickets to arrive, and being disappointed and out of pocket. Basically, what they are saying in their contract letter is as soon as they received the accommodation fee, then they will send out the other details and invite the candidates to view the hotel.

I think that this needs to be publicized so that other job seekers are not tempted to fall for this scam.
